Well, that was a hell of a day.
Ok, it wasn’t that bad. And hell, I’ve only been up for 12 hours, so what am I complaining about?
Still, I managed to get my first programming assignment done (3 full days before the EARLY due date, no less, which’ll be worth an extra 5%!), finish a homework for my other class, cook myself dinner and clean up after it, and protest a small loss of points on my last homework from my OS class because my answer WAS correct…just wordy.
Now, this may not sound like much of an accomplishment, but keep in mind that in order to get that programming assignment done, I had to (re)teach myself c++, learn how to use g++ (compiler), get x11 forwarding working with ssh (ok, that was easy), and THEN, and only then, could I work on the assignment.
Actually the biggest pain in the ass was getting cin to work like advertised. Which I never did. I just used another option, and I’m a bit worried that the ol’ professor will be miffed that I didn’t “just” use cin, since I already know that’s more or less what he was expecting. But the assignment wasn’t about cin, it was about fork and execl and wait, and THOSE I have working perfectly. In fact, it took me far less time to figure those out then it did to figure out my cin workaround.
Of course, if anyone knows of a way for wait() to wait for ALL child processes to exit, let me know. I ran across someplace suggesting it would just do that, but when I tried it, it exited right after I quit my first child process. So I did something different.
Anyway, kind worried he won’t like my code or my comments or that I didn’t test thoroughly enough. But that’s the advantage of getting it done this early…I have a few days left to ask questions and retest.
So, anyhoo…
I feel accomplished. It feels weird. I almost rather I’d played games all day.

…and why I don’t buy into the “any of the three” arguments that we hear a lot from kos and some of the other blogosphere gods. From John Cole
On the other hand, screwing up a war counts more as a utilitarian tragedy. Politicizing the government’s law enforcement cost us less in blood and treasure, but from a fundamental constitutional perspective it might be the more catastrophic failure with lasting consequences for the country. The present administration, for example, loves to cite America’s weak moments when Lincoln suspended Habeas corpus, or FDR rounded up American citizens, as useful precedents. Think about the cornucopia of precedent that Rove’s Permanent Majority project will leave behind for the next President with a gaping hole where his moral core ought to be. A leftwing wannabe Stalin could hardly ask for more – surveillance, detention and torture of American citizens without trial, intimidating political enemies through a grossly skewed investigation bias, show trials, it’s all in there.
If we don’t manage to throw some of these guys in jail (maybe send some to the hague for their trials!), then this will be the true legacy of the administration. Lawbreaking forever. America broken. Forever.

needs to visit Becky’s blog.
Also, this particular post should be of interest, and I intend to provide photographic evidence on THIS site that camp hair apparently has nothing on the masterpieces my own hair accomplishes after simply sleeping. People pay large sums of money to get as much of their hair to stand up as mine does naturally!

Was figure out how to make ssh forward x11 from the box at school home (which I think I probably just need to enable x11 forwarding in my ssh_config, after looking at it really quick) and/or see if there was a way to wrap a generic 32bit program so it would run on my 64 bit os, so I could just launch my professor’s little testing app on my own box.
What I did was algebra. I still hate math. Math still retains the ability to make me rage like nothing else I’ve ever experienced. Actually, this is not entirely true. Computer games used to get me to this point. I can remember mom being very concerned/irritated when I start screaming bloody murder at Wing Commander, which, come to think of it, may be part of the reason she hates video games so much. But I learned a long, long time ago to walk away when I start getting that mad at a game. I also enjoy games in the first place.
Unfortunately, with the math, i have no such option. And I also don’t ever enjoy math.
I have spent, in the last 48 hours, approximately 6 hours on what was probably intended to be a 1-2 hour assignment. I feel like I am getting there, but I don’t feel ready for my quiz tomorrow.
I do feel like I’ve grown up a bit, since I only once ground my teeth til they hurt, I didn’t scream once, and only threw the cat down the stairs for meowing once. (And I was plenty gentle about it, it wasn’t true flying lessons.)
Sigh.
I want my masters, I want my masters, I want my masters…

So, I went to an Edwards rally this morning. Sometimes, when I’m at those things, I have to just step back and chuckle at the formula. I know why they do things they way they’re done, but it’s still funny.
Got there about 25 minutes early, walked around to the far side, away from the doors because I knew lots of folks wouldn’t and sure enough, about 10 minutes before go time, one of the organizers got up and requested people move to my side. Listened to half a dozen state senators, local celebrities, and union leaders get up and try and rouse the crowd, and then watched Edwards come in (I was disappointed that Elizabeth Edwards wasn’t at this one.)

Anyway, Senator Edwards was great, and very clearly was trying to differentiate himself between his two other opponents. I’m pretty psyched up, but I probably don’t want to see the results in Nevada.
There’s a lot of local politicians campaigning for JRE in Missouri, because Senator Edwards came to Missouri to campaign for them and for the minimum wage raise.
As an interesting side, the guy in the yellow sweater in that picture collapsed twice. I felt like maybe Senator Edwards should’ve stopped talked after the big commotion (there were doctors for Edwards at the event, which was nice, because I didn’t have to try and remember my first aid courses from the AF.)
Anyway, it was a neat event. I almost hit on some SLU law students that are off camera to my left, but just wasn’t in the mood for random conversation after talking to the guy to my right, who was a sheet metal union member who is still trying to make up his mind. (The sheet metal union endorsed Hillary, but this guy was apparently trying to decide between Edwards and Obama. I made sure to talk about the way a Hillary nomination screws us in the general.)
Anyway, fun times. :-D
